Miffens and Glubs: March 1st, 2015

Motivation March starts today.  Here is what I am going to forgo:

1. Chips

2. Sugary Latte Drinks

3. Mini Wheats

4. Popsicles/Fudgesicles

5. Candy

I chose this list because they are each things I either eat daily (Mini Wheats) or just far, far too frequently. It’s my actually-needing-to-actively-resist list.

And I’m vowing to exercise every day.  Today, the exercise component was snow-shoeing and Yoga (plus daily family plank).

I figure I’m flexing my self-restraint/willpower muscles PLUS my actual muscles.  For this month, I will add a check list next to the scorecard  (at the bottom of each post) to fill you in on what the exercise was and what I had to struggle to resist.

But I wanted to address the 5 Down objects for today, too.  I have a really great system for single socks: they are hung on a short clothesline next to the dryer so when the missing sock comes out of the dryer, they are reunited.   It’s kind of like this, without the cute slogan and teeny socks.  It was not attractive enough to photograph…trust me!

This works really well, but as everyone knows, there are sock monsters who snatch socks when we’re not looking and then drag them into the 4th dimension.  Therefore, the overall number of single socks goes up over time, rather than down.  The only way one can possibly guarantee the return of the sock monsters’ prey is to rid oneself of the leftover sock…

All good things must end, however, and there comes a time when the “onlies” line has to be re-set to zero. For some reason, this is not exactly gut-wrenching, but certainly difficult.  With each sock I toss, I feel my brain yelling “but, wait, it’ll come out of the dryer!  I can FEEL it.”

Unfortunately, this is a cycle that has no end point.

Similarly, mittens and gloves (or “miffens and glubs” as 2 year old Solomon used to say) also are prone to being sucked into the 4th dimension.

I think I’ll feel good about this particular purge, in the days and weeks to come, but right now I’m feeling strangely fearful of that load of laundry in the dryer and very guilty about giving up the hunt for the elusive match…

Today I resisted:

1. Chips

2. Sugary Latte Drink – seemed so perfect after that snowshoe.

3. Mini Wheats – breakfast would have been a sad story, but Mike made pancakes.  Then, however, when we were out snow-shoeing in the soft snow with the crunchy top layer…it suddenly reminded me of…

4. Popsicles/Fudgesicles

5. Candy
